Sean Fraser

Biography

Sean Fraser is the Liberal Member of Parliament for Central Nova in Nova Scotia, a riding he has represented since 2015. A lawyer by training, he serves in the federal Cabinet as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and as Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Born in Antigonish and raised in Merigomish in Pictou County, Fraser earned a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis Xavier University in 2006. He went on to complete a law degree at Dalhousie University in 2009 and a master’s degree in public international law at Leiden University in the Netherlands in 2011.

Before entering politics, Fraser spent three years in Calgary as an associate with the law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. He also worked with a non-governmental organization in South Africa on matters related to that country’s Promotion of Access to Information Act.

Fraser was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 federal election. He served as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change from 2018 to 2019, and then as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Middle Class Prosperity. In 2021 he joined Cabinet as Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and in July 2023 he became Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, a role in which he worked on housing supply initiatives including the Housing Accelerator Fund.

Re-elected to a fourth term in the 2025 federal election, Fraser was sworn in as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, while also taking responsibility for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. In 2021, he was named “Best Orator” and a finalist for “Rising Star” in the Maclean’s Parliamentarians of the Year Awards.

Fraser lives in New Glasgow and continues to represent the communities of Central Nova in Ottawa.
