About Anna Gainey

Anna Gainey is the Liberal Member of Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount and serves as Secretary of State for Children and Youth in the government of Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Born in Montreal, Anna grew up in Westmount as a bilingual Anglophone Quebecer. She is the daughter of Hockey Hall of Fame member Bob Gainey, the former Montreal Canadiens player and general manager. She studied political science at McGill University before completing a master’s degree in International Relations at the London School of Economics.

After her studies, Anna worked as a policy advisor to the Ministers of National Defence and Veterans Affairs, Bill Graham and John McCallum. She later became deeply involved in the Liberal Party of Canada, and in February 2014, at the age of 36, she was elected President of the party. She was re-elected in 2016 and led the party organization through its success in the 2015 federal election, stepping down at the end of her second term in April 2018. She subsequently served as Chief Executive of the policy think tank Canada 2020.

In 2023, following the resignation of former MP Marc Garneau, Anna won the Liberal nomination in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount. She was elected to the House of Commons in a by-election on June 19, 2023, with more than half of the vote, and was re-elected in the 2025 federal election.

On May 13, 2025, Anna was appointed Secretary of State for Children and Youth in the 30th Canadian Ministry. In this role, and as the representative for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount, she works on behalf of young Canadians and families while serving the residents of her community.

Anna lives in Westmount. She is married to Tom Pitfield.
