Kent MacDonald for Representative
Kent MacDonald is a Canadian politician, dairy farmer, and community leader who has made a significant impact in Prince Edward Island’s political landscape. A dedicated member of the Liberal Party of Canada, MacDonald was elected as the Member of Parliament for Cardigan in the 2025 Canadian federal election, succeeding longtime MP Lawrence MacAulay. His journey to public office was shaped by decades of experience in agriculture, business management, and grassroots advocacy.
MacDonald is a seventh-generation dairy farmer from Little Pond, Prince Edward Island. He is the President of Pondsedge Farms, his family’s 1000-head dairy farm that grows 1700 acres of cropped land. His upbringing instilled in him a strong commitment to hard work, sustainability, and community service. He attended Dundas Consolidated and Souris Regional High School before pursuing higher education at Mount Allison University, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in marketing and management. During his time at Mount Allison, he played varsity football and was recognized as an Atlantic University Sport All-Star defensive lineman.
After graduating, MacDonald lived and worked in Ontario for several years before returning home to Prince Edward Island in 1988 to work at Pondsedge Farms. Under his leadership, the farm has won numerous awards, including the PEI Heritage Award, Soil Conservationist of the Year, the PEI Veterinary Association Cow Comfort Award, and various quality and high-production awards. His expertise in agricultural management and sustainable farming practices has positioned him as a respected figure in Canada’s farming community.
Beyond his work in agriculture, MacDonald has been deeply involved in community service. He has served as a Director, Vice-Chairman, and Chairman of Dairy Farmers of PEI, as well as Director and Vice-Chairman of the PEI Federation of Agriculture. His leadership in these roles has strengthened local farming initiatives and reinforced his commitment to economic development in rural communities. His community involvement also overlaps with his love of sports, as he has coached both minor hockey and tackle football on Prince Edward Island.
MacDonald’s transition into federal politics was driven by his desire to bring a strong, agriculture-focused voice to Ottawa. When longtime Cardigan MP Lawrence MacAulay announced his retirement in early March 2025, MacDonald decided to seek the Liberal nomination. His campaign emphasized economic growth, rural development, and support for farmers. On election night, he secured a decisive victory, defeating Conservative candidate James Aylward by a margin of 57% to 37.4%.
His tenure in Parliament continues to reflect his dedication to progressive policies, economic resilience, and community advocacy. His vision for Cardigan and Canada is one of sustainability, opportunity, and responsible leadership, ensuring that future generations can thrive in a country that values innovation and hard work. His contributions to both agriculture and politics have positioned him as a prominent figure in Canadian public life.
