About Tanveer Shahnawaz

Tanveer Shahnawaz is the Liberal Member of Parliament for Beaches—East York, the Toronto community where he was born, raised and continues to live.

Tanveer grew up in the Crescent Town neighbourhood of East York. He is of Bangladeshi descent and has long been active in Toronto’s Bangladeshi community. He attended the University of Toronto Scarborough, where he earned a degree in political science.

Tanveer’s involvement in federal politics began in 2015, when he volunteered on Nathaniel Erskine-Smith’s campaign in Beaches—East York. He went on to join Erskine-Smith’s staff and spent approximately a decade serving constituents in the riding, eventually becoming manager of the constituency office. In that role he helped residents navigate federal government programs and services and assisted community organizations in securing federal funding. He later served as a special adviser to Erskine-Smith during his time as Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, working on housing and infrastructure issues.

Tanveer has also been an active community leader. He served as co-chair of the Taylor-Massey and Oakridge Community Response Team, and during the COVID-19 pandemic he worked with East Toronto Health Partners and local organizations to establish mobile vaccination clinics in underserved neighbourhoods. He has also worked alongside Danforth Families for Safe Communities in its advocacy for stronger gun-control measures.

When Erskine-Smith resigned from the House of Commons in July 2026, Tanveer sought the Liberal nomination with his endorsement and won the nomination in July 2026. He was elected Member of Parliament for Beaches—East York in the by-election held on August 31, 2026. During the campaign he emphasized his deep roots in the riding and spoke out on local issues, including opposition to the proposed expansion of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

As a Member of Parliament, Tanveer continues the constituency-focused work that has defined his career, representing the residents of Beaches—East York in Ottawa.
