About Michael Barrett

Michael Barrett is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Leeds—Grenville—Thousand Islands—Rideau Lakes in Eastern Ontario. Born in Scarborough, Ontario, in 1984, he lives in Brockville and is the father of five children.

Barrett graduated from Algonquin College in Ottawa and enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving in the Regular Force as a telecommunications lineman and attaining the rank of corporal. After his military service, he worked as a human resources manager. He also served four years as an elected councillor in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal, and in 2022 he was named one of Brockville’s 40 Under 40.

Barrett was first elected to the House of Commons in a by-election on December 3, 2018, and has since been re-elected in 2019, 2021 and 2025. Within the Conservative caucus he has served as Shadow Minister for Ethics, Deputy Opposition House Leader and Co-Chair of Question Period Planning, Shadow Minister for Health, and, from 2022 to 2026, Shadow Minister for Ethics and Accountable Government. In that work he has taken an active part in parliamentary scrutiny of government ethics and accountability, including committee study of the ArriveCAN procurement program.

Barrett has served on several House of Commons committees, including the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, as well as the committees on Justice and Human Rights, Government Operations and Estimates, and Procedure and House Affairs. In the 44th Parliament he was Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Health and of the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying.

In a 2026 shadow cabinet shuffle, Barrett was named the Official Opposition’s Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs. Drawing on his own service in uniform, he has introduced Private Member’s Bill C-282, the Service Dogs for Veterans Act, which would recognize service dogs as an eligible rehabilitation support for veterans and establish a national framework for standards in the breeding, training, certification and placement of service dogs.
