Biography

Jennifer McKelvie is a Canadian politician, geoscientist, and municipal leader who has played a significant role in Ontario’s political landscape. A dedicated member of the Liberal Party of Canada, McKelvie was elected as the Member of Parliament for Ajax in the 2025 Canadian federal election. Her journey to public office was shaped by years of experience in municipal governance, environmental policy, and scientific research.

Born in 1977 as Jennifer Gray in East York, Ontario, McKelvie spent her early years in an apartment complex on the North York-Scarborough border. She attended Precious Blood Catholic School, where she participated in the French immersion program, and later graduated from Senator O’Connor College School. Her upbringing instilled in her a strong commitment to education, environmental stewardship, and public service.

McKelvie pursued higher education at the University of Toronto Scarborough, earning a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science. She continued her studies at the University of Toronto, obtaining a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in geology, specializing in geochemistry, environmental remediation, and biochemistry. Her academic mentor and supervisor was Barbara Sherwood Lollar, a renowned geochemist. McKelvie’s research was recognized and supported by prestigious awards, including the L’Oréal UNESCO Women in Science Fellowship and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Her career in environmental science led her to work with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, where she managed research partnerships focused on sustainability and infrastructure planning. Her expertise in environmental policy positioned her as a respected voice in municipal governance.

McKelvie’s political career began at the municipal level when she was elected as the Toronto City Councillor for Ward 25 Scarborough—Rouge Park in 2018. She was re-elected in 2022 and was appointed Deputy Mayor of Toronto, representing Scarborough. In this capacity, she served as Acting Mayor from February to July 2023 following the resignation of John Tory. Under Mayor Olivia Chow, she continued in her role as Deputy Mayor, serving in an honorary capacity and advocating for Scarborough’s interests.

During her tenure on Toronto City Council, McKelvie chaired the Infrastructure and Environment Committee, where she championed policies related to climate action, sustainable development, and urban planning. She was also a member of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the Green Municipal Fund Council for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, supporting municipalities across Canada in adopting sustainable practices.

Her transition into federal politics was driven by her commitment to advocating for Ajax and Ontario at the national level. In the 2025 Canadian federal election, she ran as the Liberal candidate and secured a decisive victory, succeeding Mark Holland. Her campaign focused on infrastructure investment, environmental protection, and economic growth. Shortly after her election, she resigned from Toronto City Council to fully dedicate herself to her new role as a Member of Parliament.
