Shannon Miedema for Representative
Shannon Miedema is a Canadian politician, environmental advocate, and public servant who has played a significant role in Nova Scotia’s political landscape. A dedicated member of the Liberal Party of Canada, Miedema was elected as the Member of Parliament for Halifax in the 2025 Canadian federal election. Her journey to public office was shaped by years of experience in municipal governance, climate policy, and community engagement.
Born in Ottawa, Ontario, in 1979 or 1980, Miedema moved to Halifax to pursue higher education. She attended the University of King’s College, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, followed by a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from Dalhousie University. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Earth System Science from Queen’s University. Her academic background provided her with the expertise to navigate complex environmental policies and advocate for sustainable development.
Miedema’s career in environmental policy has been transformative. She spent 15 years working for the Municipality of Halifax, where she served as Director of Environment and Climate Change. In this role, she oversaw the design and implementation of HalifACT, the city’s award-winning climate action plan. Her leadership in municipal sustainability initiatives reinforced her reputation as a dedicated advocate for climate resilience and responsible urban planning.
Beyond her municipal service, Miedema has been actively involved in various organizations that support environmental and social progress. She was President of the Young Naturalists Club of Canada and was awarded a Clean16 Award in 2023 for her contributions to environmental leadership. Her expertise in sustainability extended to consulting roles, where she worked as a Socioeconomic Analyst for Stantec and a Sustainability and Socioeconomic Services Consultant for Raidho Resource Consulting Limited.
Her transition into federal politics was driven by her commitment to advocating for Halifax at the national level. In the 2025 Canadian federal election, she ran as the Liberal candidate and secured a decisive victory, succeeding Andy Fillmore. Her campaign focused on climate action, economic development, public safety, and affordability. Shortly after her election, she was appointed to key parliamentary roles, where she has continued to champion progressive policies and responsible governance.
Miedema’s tenure in Parliament continues to reflect her dedication to sustainability, economic resilience, and community advocacy. Her vision for Halifax and Canada is one of inclusivity, environmental stewardship, and opportunity, ensuring that future generations can thrive in a country that values innovation and responsible leadership. Her contributions to both municipal and federal politics have positioned her as a prominent figure in Canadian public life.
