About Doug Eyolfson
Dr. Doug Eyolfson is the Liberal Member of Parliament for Winnipeg West in Manitoba. A physician who spent two decades working in emergency medicine, he first served in the House of Commons from 2015 to 2019 and was returned to Parliament in the April 2025 federal election.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Eyolfson studied at the University of Manitoba, earning a Bachelor of Science and his medical degree. He worked for 20 years as an emergency department physician in Winnipeg, and during his medical career served as a flight physician with Manitoba Air Ambulance, medical director of Manitoba’s Land Ambulance Program, and medical director of the Province of Manitoba’s EMS Medical Dispatch Centre.
Eyolfson was first elected in 2015 in Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia—Headingley, saying his decision to run grew out of seeing the daily impacts of poverty, homelessness, substance use and crime as an emergency physician. In Parliament he sat on the Standing Committee on Health, the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs and the Subcommittee on Sports-Related Concussions, and chaired the Manitoba Liberal Caucus.
Drawing on his medical background, Eyolfson introduced a private member’s bill for a federal framework on distracted driving, sponsored the Child Health Protection Act in the House of Commons, and helped draft the health committee’s report recommending national pharmacare. He also initiated committee studies on methamphetamine use and on violence against health-care workers, and supported the tri-level task force on Winnipeg’s meth crisis.
After close contests in 2019 and 2021, Eyolfson won Winnipeg West in 2025. He continues to bring a physician’s perspective to his work in Ottawa on behalf of west Winnipeg residents. He is married to Sowmya Dakshinamurti.
