Biography

Joyce Murray is a Canadian politician, businesswoman, and environmental advocate. Born on July 11, 1954, she is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada and has been representing the Vancouver Quadra riding in the House of Commons since 2008. Murray has been re-elected in the 41st, 42nd, 43rd, and 44th federal elections. She has held various ministerial positions, including President of the Treasury Board, Minister of Digital Government, and Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard.

Before entering federal politics, Murray served as a cabinet minister in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. She held the positions of Minister of Water, Land, and Air Protection from 2001 to 2004 and Minister of Management Services until 2005. Murray has also been actively involved in environmental advocacy and was the president of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment from 2003 to 2004.

Murray was born in South Africa and immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1961. She settled in Vancouver and has remained a resident of the Point Grey area. Murray’s business career began in the field of reforestation, and she co-founded Brinkman and Associates Reforestation Ltd. with her husband. The company grew and became one of the leading reforestation and ecosystem restoration firms in Canada.

In her political career, Murray has been a strong advocate for environmental protection, climate action, and sustainable development. She has also championed issues related to small business, tourism, and democratic reform. Murray has introduced several bills in the House of Commons, addressing topics such as bike infrastructure, accountability and transparency for intelligence agencies, and banning oil tanker traffic on Canada’s Pacific North Coast.

Murray ran for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada in 2013, advocating for increased gender representation, carbon pricing, and cooperation with other parties. Although she finished in second place behind Justin Trudeau, Murray played a significant role in shaping the party’s platform and policies.
