Jake Sawatzky for Representative
Jake Sawatzky is a Canadian politician from the Liberal Party of Canada who was elected as the Member of Parliament for New Westminster—Burnaby—Maillardville in the 2025 Canadian federal election.
Born in 2000 in Surrey, British Columbia, Sawatzky was named after his grandfather, Jacob Sawatzky, a Mennonite refugee who fled Stalinist Ukraine and later became a physics teacher in Canada. He pursued higher education at the University of British Columbia (UBC), earning a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience in 2024. During his time at UBC, he was actively involved in student leadership, running for vice president external of UBC’s Alma Mater Society, though he was unsuccessful in his bid. He was also a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and engaged in various campus activities. At the time of his election, he was pursuing a master’s degree in counselling psychology at Trinity Western University.
Sawatzky’s political career gained momentum when he ran as the Liberal candidate for New Westminster—Burnaby—Maillardville in the 2025 federal election. His victory was notable as he unseated longtime New Democratic Party MP Peter Julian, marking a significant shift in the riding’s political landscape. Alongside Fares Al Soud, Tatiana Auguste, and Amandeep Sodhi, Sawatzky became one of the first four Canadian MPs born in the 21st century.
Beyond politics, Sawatzky has been deeply involved in philanthropy and community engagement. He is the president of Drop the Puck for Mental Health, an annual hockey event that raises funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association. His commitment to mental health advocacy has been a defining aspect of his career, as he has worked to raise awareness and support for those struggling with mental health challenges. Additionally, he co-founded We Outside, a concert booking agency that has supported the growth of British Columbia musicians.
Sawatzky’s tenure in Parliament continues to reflect his dedication to progressive policies, community development, and mental health advocacy. His vision for New Westminster—Burnaby—Maillardville and Canada is one of inclusivity, economic opportunity, and social equity, ensuring that future generations can thrive in a country that values diversity and responsible leadership. His contributions to both philanthropy and politics have positioned him as a rising figure in Canadian public life.
