Biography

Gregor Angus Bethune Robertson is a Canadian politician, businessman, and environmental advocate who has played a significant role in British Columbia’s political landscape. A dedicated member of the Liberal Party of Canada, Robertson was elected as the Member of Parliament for Vancouver Fraserview—South Burnaby in the 2025 Canadian federal election. His journey to public office was shaped by years of experience in municipal governance, business leadership, and sustainability advocacy.

Born on September 18, 1964, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Robertson grew up in a family that valued education, public service, and environmental stewardship. His father, John Robertson, was a lawyer, while his mother, Corneil Therrien, was a teacher. After his parents divorced, he spent part of his childhood in Portola Valley, California, before returning to British Columbia. He graduated from Carson Graham Secondary School in North Vancouver in 1982 and pursued higher education at Colorado College and the University of British Columbia, earning degrees in English and Biology.

Robertson’s career began in agriculture and business. In 1994, he co-founded Happy Planet, an organic juice company that became a leader in sustainable food production. His entrepreneurial success positioned him as a champion of environmental sustainability and economic innovation. His commitment to green business practices and social responsibility earned him recognition in Canada’s business community.

His political career gained momentum when he was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Vancouver-Fairview in the 2005 British Columbia provincial election as a member of the New Democratic Party. During his tenure, he focused on environmental policies, economic development, and social equity. In 2008, he resigned from his MLA position to run for mayor of Vancouver.

Robertson was elected as the 39th mayor of Vancouver in 2008 as part of the Vision Vancouver slate. He served three consecutive terms until 2018, making him the longest-serving mayor in Vancouver’s history. His tenure was marked by ambitious initiatives, including the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan, which aimed to make Vancouver the most environmentally sustainable city in the world. He also spearheaded the city’s first comprehensive Economic Action Strategy, focusing on job creation, housing affordability, and urban development. Under his leadership, Vancouver gained global recognition for its environmental policies, economic resilience, and commitment to social inclusion.

After leaving municipal politics in 2018, Robertson continued his work in sustainability and international advocacy. He represented mayors around the world at the United Nations, helping cities collaborate on climate action and clean energy initiatives. His expertise in urban development and environmental policy made him a sought-after advisor on global sustainability efforts.

In the 2025 Canadian federal election, Robertson returned to politics, securing victory in Vancouver Fraserview—South Burnaby as a Liberal candidate. Shortly after his election, he was appointed Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet. In these roles, he has focused on strengthening Canada’s housing policies, improving infrastructure investment, and fostering economic growth in the Pacific region.
