Ellis Benjamin Ross is a Canadian politician and Indigenous leader who has played a significant role in British Columbia’s political landscape. A dedicated member of the Conservative Party of Canada, Ross was elected as the Member of Parliament for Skeena—Bulkley Valley in the 2025 Canadian federal election, marking the first time the riding had been won by the Conservatives since its formation in 2003.

Born in Kitimat, British Columbia, Ross grew up on the Haisla Nation reserve in Kitamaat Village. He was the second youngest of seven children and spent his early years working in various industries, including survey work for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, operating a charter boat, and running a hand logging and salvage log beachcombing business with his brother. His deep connection to his community and his commitment to economic development led him to become the Haisla Nation Council’s first full-time councillor in 2003. In this role, he negotiated a $50 million agreement with Kitimat LNG in 2006 to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on one of the Haisla Nation reserves. His leadership in economic development earned him recognition, and in 2011, he was elected Chief Councillor of the Haisla Nation, a position he held until he transitioned into provincial politics.

Ross’s political career expanded when he ran in the 2017 British Columbia provincial election as a BC Liberal candidate. He was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Skeena, a riding that had historically been a stronghold for the New Democratic Party. Upon his election, Premier Christy Clark appointed him to cabinet as Minister of Natural Gas Development and Minister Responsible for Housing. Although his tenure as minister was brief due to the Liberal minority government’s defeat in a confidence vote, he continued to serve as an opposition critic for Natural Gas and Petroleum Resources. He was re-elected as MLA in 2020 and was named Official Opposition critic for Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

Ross’s leadership extended beyond provincial politics when he ran for federal office in 2025. His election as the Member of Parliament for Skeena—Bulkley Valley was a historic victory for the Conservative Party in the region.
