About Pierre Poilievre
Pierre Poilievre is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Battle River—Crowfoot in Alberta. He serves as Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of the Official Opposition, roles he has held since 2022.
Pierre was born on June 3, 1979, in Calgary, Alberta, and was adopted by two schoolteachers, Marlene and Donald Poilievre. He grew up in suburban Calgary, where he played hockey, went on family camping trips and worked as a paperboy for the Calgary Sun. He went on to study at the University of Calgary, earning a bachelor’s degree in international relations.
Pierre moved to Ottawa in 2000 to work for Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day and was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004, representing Nepean—Carleton and later Carleton. Under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, he served in several parliamentary secretary roles from 2006 to 2013, then as Minister of Democratic Reform from 2013 to 2015 and concurrently as Minister of Employment and Social Development in 2015. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the Conservative Party’s Shadow Minister for Finance.
In 2022, Pierre won the Conservative Party leadership on the first ballot. As Leader of the Opposition, he focuses on economic issues, especially the cost of living, and advocates for reducing the deficit, cutting personal income taxes and repealing the federal carbon tax.
Pierre led the Conservatives in the 2025 federal election, in which the party grew from 120 to 144 seats and earned its largest share of the popular vote since its founding in 2003. On August 18, 2025, he returned to the House of Commons by winning the Battle River—Crowfoot by-election with almost 81 per cent of the vote. He continues to lead the Official Opposition and represent the people of east-central Alberta in Parliament.
