About Michelle Rempel Garner
Michelle Rempel Garner is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Calgary Nose Hill in Alberta. First elected in 2011, she is a former federal cabinet minister and one of the most recognized voices in the Conservative caucus.
Michelle was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is of partial Franco-Manitoban ancestry. She earned a degree in economics from the University of Manitoba, helping to pay her way through school as a classically trained pianist. Before entering politics, she worked in the technology commercialization division of the University of Manitoba and later served as director of the University of Calgary’s Institutional Programs Division, where she led a redesign of the university’s service delivery model that saw sponsored research revenues grow dramatically.
Michelle became involved in federal politics as a volunteer and later as president of her local Conservative riding association. She was elected to the House of Commons in 2011 for Calgary Centre-North and, following redistribution, has represented Calgary Nose Hill since 2015, most recently being re-elected in 2025. After her first election she served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment, and in July 2013 she was appointed Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, becoming at the time the youngest woman appointed to cabinet in Canadian history.
In opposition, Michelle has held a number of senior critic portfolios, including Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship; Industry and Economic Development; Health; and Natural Resources. She has championed the protection of persecuted minorities, including a 2016 motion recognizing the genocide of the Yazidis that passed unanimously, and has advocated for greater privacy protections, improved rural internet access and the rights of lawful firearms owners.
In the 45th Parliament, Michelle serves as vice-chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration. Her work has been recognized by Maclean’s, which twice named her a Parliamentarian of the Year in the Rising Star category, and by the World Economic Forum, which selected her as a Young Global Leader in 2016.
Michelle is married to Jeffrey Garner.
