Warkentin is an alumnus of the Peace River Bible Institute and studied business and marketing at Grande Prairie Regional College. Before entering Parliament, he owned and operated a custom home building company. He has long been active in conservative politics, serving on the board of his local Conservative constituency association and taking part in the Reform Party of Canada and the Canadian Alliance.
Warkentin was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2006 federal election for the riding of Peace River and was re-elected there in 2008 and 2011. Following redistribution, he represented Grande Prairie—Mackenzie from 2015 to 2025, and he was re-elected in 2025 in the riding of Grande Prairie. He has won every election he has contested with more than 56 per cent of the vote.
Over his parliamentary career, Warkentin chaired the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development from 2011 to 2015 and was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services in 2015. In opposition he has served as Official Opposition Critic for Agriculture, Official Opposition Deputy House Leader, and, from 2022 to 2025, Deputy Chief Opposition Whip and Conservative Question Period Coordinator.
On May 7, 2025, Warkentin became Chief Opposition Whip under Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. In this role he helps manage the Conservative caucus in the House of Commons while continuing to represent the people of Grande Prairie in Ottawa.
