About Blake Richards

Blake Richards is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Airdrie—Cochrane in Alberta. Born on November 8, 1974, in Olds, Alberta, he attended Red Deer College and the University of Calgary, where he earned a degree in political science. He is married to Carmen Richards.

Before entering politics, Richards worked in the oil field and in agriculture-related industries before starting his own real estate business. He also served his community as a volunteer firefighter and minor hockey coach.

Richards was first elected to the House of Commons in 2008 for the riding of Wild Rose and was re-elected there in 2011. He went on to represent Banff—Airdrie following the 2015, 2019 and 2021 elections, and was re-elected in 2025 in the new riding of Airdrie—Cochrane. Over his career he has served as Chief Opposition Whip and as the Official Opposition’s Shadow Minister for Small Business, Export Promotion and Tourism, as well as Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs. In the 41st Parliament he chaired the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, the Special Committee on Co-operatives and the Parliamentary Tourism Caucus.

Richards has a record of legislative and advocacy work. His 2010 national petition calling for reform of the pardons system preceded Bill C-23A, which limited pardons for serious crimes. His Private Member’s Bill C-309, which made it a Criminal Code offence to conceal one’s identity during a riot or unlawful assembly, received Royal Assent in 2013. In 2018, his Motion 110, directing a House committee to study the impact of pregnancy and infant loss on parents, passed unanimously.

In the 45th Parliament, Richards serves as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs. He has been recognized three times as the Hardest Working and Best Constituency MP in The Hill Times’ annual survey, received a Canadian Tourism Award for his work on behalf of the tourism industry, and has raised $360,000 through the Rocky Mountain Hockey Challenge for groups that assist victims of crime. He remains focused on being a strong voice for the people of Airdrie—Cochrane.
